Question
362 Ch. 9: Fluids-Density and Pressure 9-16 When liquids freeze the density changes, which means that the volume changes as well. Water is one of the few liquids that expand when frozen. That is why it is a bad idea to put water in the freezer in a sealed container. Pete decides to test this idea. He sticks an unopened soft drink can in the freezer. Given: In liquid form the soft drink has a density of 1.11 × 103 kg/m? more dense than water because there is sugar dissolved in it. The soft drink in the can has a mass-af 400.0 g. An ice cube made of the same kind of soft drink has a volume of 13.4 cm3 and a mass of 13.8 g. (a) What is the volume of the liquid soft drink? (b) What is the density of the soft drink frozen into a cube? (c) What is the volume of the soft drink after it has frozen? Find:Explanation / Answer
Given,
rho = 1.11 x 10^3 kg/m^3
M = 400 g ; V' = 13.4 cm^3 ; M' = 13.8 g
a)we know that
density = mass/volume
volume = mass/density
volume = 0.4/1.1 x 10^3 = 3.64 x 10^-4 m^3
Hence, volume = 3.64 x 10^-4 m^3
b)density = mass/volume
density = 0.0138/(1.34 x 10^-5) = 1.03 x 10^3 kg/m^3
Hence, rho = 1.03 x 10^3 kg/m^3
c)V = mass/density
V = 0.4/(1.03 x 10^3) = 3.88 x 10^-4 m^3
Hence, V = 3.88 x 10^-4 m^3
