Explanation / Answer

20

Given

focal length of the two converging lenses are f = 14.9 cm ,

separation of the lens is 40.1 cm

object distance s = 30 cm from the first lens

the image distance of the first lens is

from the lens equation

1/s + 1/s' = 1/f

1/s' = 1/f - 1/s

1/s' = 1/14.9 - 1/30

s' = 29.60 cm from the first lens and which is at (40.1-29.60 = 10.5 cm infront of the second lens)

now the lens equation for lens 2 is

1/s2' = 1/f - 1/s2

1/s2' = 1/14.9 - 1/10.5

s2' = -35.55 cm infront of the lens 2

the magnification is M = -s2'/s2 = - (-35.55/10.5) = 3.3857
