section 5.3 points 5. Answers CJ10 5.P019. Nobes Q Ask Your Tea banging by one rm bahe e et A 95-kg monkey is hanging by one arm from a branch and is swinging on a vertical circle. As an approximation, assume a radial distance of 90 the point where the monkey's mass is located. As the monkey swings through the lowest point on the cirde, it has a speed of 3,.1 m/s between the branch an (a) Find the magnitude of the centripetal force acting on the monkey 194.53 1 × N (b) Find the magnitude of the tension in the monkey's arm Additional Materials Section 5.3

Explanation / Answer

Given that

mass of monkey is m= 9.5 kg

adial distance r= 90 cm = 0.90 m

velocity v = 3.1 m/s

we know that centripetal force is given by

mv^2/r

Fcentripetal = (9.5*3.12) / 0.90 =101.44 N

b)

now , at the lowest point lets visualise that tension is upward , and weight of monkey is acting downwards ,

hence net force = T - mg
this provides the required centripetal force, hence
mv2/r = T - mg

T= Fcentripetal + mg

T =101.44 N + 9.5*9.8 =194.54 N
