Express your answer to three significant Sigures and include the appropriate units 20 4

Explanation / Answer

mass of ball, m = 0.614 kg ( moving east, i is unit vector)

speed, u = 3.86 i m/s

mass of other ball, m' = 0.307 kg

speed, u' = 0 ( at rest)

A. for perfectly elastic collision

let final speeds of the balls be v and v'

then from conservation of meometnum

mu = mv + m'v'

0.614*3.86 = 0.614v + 0.307v'

2.86 = v + 0.5v'

also, coefficient of restitution for elastic collsions is 1

u/(v' - v) = 1

u = v' - v

v = v' - u = v' - 3.86

hence

2.86 = v' - 3.86 + 0.5v'

hence

v' = 4.48 m/s

v = 0.62 m/s

hence v = 0.62 m/s

B. as v > 0 hence the direction is along east

C. v' = 4.48 m/s

D. as V' > 0 hence the direction is east
