Question
You apply the Phylogenetic Species Concept to determine how many species there are in the fivepopulations listed below. To do so, you are given data on three different genes collected from tenindividuals in each of the five populations (that is, 50 total individuals are sampled). The populationprofiles are shown below. Different alleles for each gene are indicated using different letters (A or B).How many species should you recognize using the phylogenetic species concept based on these data?
gene 1 gene 2 gene 3
Population 1: A, B B A
Population 2: A B A
Population 3: B B A
Population 4: B B A,B
Population 5: A A A
I know that the answer is two species but I dont understand why.
Explanation / Answer
Here we can see 2 populations using this phylogenetic concept population 1 and population 4
Population 1 has 2 alleles in gene 1 i.e A AND B
whereas population 4 has 2 alleles in gene 3 A AND B
now all other species have a single allele either A or B in each of their gene
