Question

given that v = c/n and n1 sin1 = n 2 = sin2Provide a sample calculation to find n the index of refraction for an acrylic trapezoid: (the index of refraction for air is 1)

Place the last page of this lab on the table in front of the light box and put the acrylic trapezoid within one of the outlines. The ray of light should lie along the direction indicated on the sheet so that the path of the light looks something like the figure below. incident ray refracted ray emerging The section of the trapezoid we are using is rectangular. Why is the ray that enters the trapezoid parallel to the ray that emerges on the other side?

Explanation / Answer

Tje index of refraction for light varies with the frequency of the light, white light that enters the material will separate into its component colors as each frequency is bent a different amount. For visible light, the index of refraction, increases with increase in frequency.

Here, the acrylic trapezoid acts like a prism and separates the white light into colours.
Keep changing the incident angle( 1) with respect to the same normal that you would have drawn on the trapezoid, and measure the largest possible refracted angle( 2). This can be for different colours of rays.
n1 will alwyas be 1, n2 will vary depending on the colour of the refracted ray.
