Explanation / Answer

Population     range:

The range of a population is the geographical area over which the population is distributed. The distribution of population is influenced by a number of factors, the most important are the climate of the particular region. Different plant and animals may have different range of distribution. Some populations are found distributed over a wide area. E.g. crows in animal populations and congress weed (Parthenium) in plant population. Some species may have a very limited range.

Population          distribution:

It refers to the manner in which a species is spatially arranged.

There are three types of population distribution:

Uniform (even distribution) – the distance between the populations is evenly spaced. This may arise from the need to maximize the space between individuals due to competition for a resource e.g. water, nutrients. E.g penguins exhibit uniform spacing.

Random: also called unpredicatable spacing. It is the least common type of distribution in nature. It happens in habitats where environmental conditions and resources are consistent.

Clumped or aggregated – the most common type of distribution in nature. The distance between individuals is minimized.

Population          growth:          it is the growth of a population over a given period of time. It depends on the increase in the number of individuals in a population.

Population          size:    it refers to the number of individuals in a population at a given period of time. It is generally denoted by N.

Population          density:

It is the number of individuals of a population per unit of area at a given point of time. The unit of area can depend on the convenience of the researcher though a square kilometer or square mile is commonly used unit. This helps us to know whether the distribution of individuals in a given area is optimal or not. It is found out by sampling with the habitat of the species under study.
