Extra credit problems PHYS 1434 31A To get extra point you need to come see me and bring your solution in writing My office hour is Wed 4-5PM, Namm-801 The deadline for the work submission is Dec. 13, 2017 No work will be accepted after this date. 1. (3 points) At the instant when the current in a coil is increasing at a rate of 0.064 A/s, the magnitude of the self-induced emf is 0.016 V. What is the inductance of the coil? 2. (3 points) A flat, square coil with 15 turns has sides of length 0.12 m. The coil rotates in a magnetic field of 0.025 T. What is the rotation period of the coil if the maximum emf produced is 20 mV? (Hint: Look at the motional emf induced across the ends of the segments of the coil.)

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

1) Inductance (L) = e / (di/dt)

=> L = 0.016 / 0.064

=> L = 0.25 Henry

2) induced emf (e) = change in flux / time

=> e = N x B x A / t

=> t = N x B x A / e

=> t = 15 x 0.025 x (0.12)^2 / 0.020

=> t = 0.27 sec
