Question

I need help please with the question at the top and the question at the bottom asking for the percent difference for fusion and fission

Calculate the energy released (in MeV) in the following fusion reaction: H e + He He + + Masses relevant to this problem include: mHe-4 4.002603u, mHe3 = 3.01 6029u,and mH = 1·007825u 3 4 If each of these Uranium-235 nuclei undergoes nuclear FISSION and 200.6 MeV is released during each fission reaction, how much total energy (in MeV) will be released from 3 kg of Uranium-235? 1.54185633440885×1027 MeV If each of these Deuterium atoms undergoes nuclear FUSION and 3.27 MeV of energy is released during each fusion reaction, how much total energy (in MeV) will be released from 3 kg of Deuterium? Remember that it takes TWO deuterium atoms for EACH fusion reaction! 1.46655482195043x1027 Mev Examine your answers for the total energy released for EQUAL masses of fission and fusion fuel. Calculate the Percent Difference (units %) between your two answers. To calculate the Percent Difference, remember that you must take the absolute value of the difference between the two answers, divide by the average of the two answers, and then multiply by 100. (ls one process dramatically more energetic

Explanation / Answer

1. Mass difference = 2(3.016029) - (4.002603 + 2(1.007825)

= 0.0138 u

and 1 u energy equivalent = 931.5 MeV

Energy released = 931.5 x 0.0138 = 12.86 MeV .........Ans

------------------------------------------------------------

3 kg deuterium ,

total number of deutrium = (3000/2) (6.022 x 10^23)

= 0.9033 x 10^27

total reactions = 0.9033 x 10^27 /2 = 0.4516 x 10^26

energy re;eased = 0.4516 x 3.27 x 10^26 = 1.4769 x 10^27 MeV

for 3 kg He:

energy released = (3000 / 6)(6.022 x 10^23) (12.86) = 3.872 x 10^27 MeV

Average = (3.872 + 1.4769) = 5.349 x 10^27 MeV

difference = 2.3951 x 10^27 MEV

% diff = (2.3951 / 5.349) x 100 = 44.8%
