Question

The wheels, axle, and handles of a wheelbarrow weigh W= 66.5 N. The load chamber and its contents weigh WL-637 N. The drawing shows these two forces in two different wheelbarrow designs. To support the wheelbarrow in equilibriumm, the man's hands apply a force to the handles that is directed vertically upward. Consider a rotational axis at the point where the tire contacts the ground, directed perpendicular to the plane of the paper. Find the magnitude of the man's force for both designs. Explanation / Answer

(a) clock wise moment= anticlockwise moment

637 × 0.400 + 66.5 × 0.600 = F × 1.30

1.30 F = 254.8 + 39.9 = 294.7

Hence F = 294.7/1.3 = 226.69 N = 227N ( upto 3 SF)

(b) 637 passes through the point of rotation

Hence 66.5 × 0.600 = F × 1.30 = 39.9

F = 39.9/1.30 = 30.7N
