Fundamentals of Physics 10e, Halliday. Chap 14 Prob 42.

Attached is the problem statement and step 1 of the Chegg solution. I am not undestanding eq 1 is the first step 1. I understand that the bouyant force

Problem Statement: A flotation device is in the shape of a right cylinder, with a height of .5m and a face area A=4 m^2 on top and bottom, and a density of .4 times that of fresh water. It is initially held fully submerged in with its top face at the water surface. The it is allowed to ascend gradually until it begins to float. How much work does the buoyant force do on the device during the ascent?

Explanation / Answer

Notice the buyont force is not constant, as the cylinder rise the fluid displaced by the cylinder changes and hence buyant forces changes. The h here is not the height of the cylinder, it is the variable of the integration and the solution has chosen y = 0 the surface of water, so the positions inside the water are negative(to make heights and distances positive inside the water). Hence we need -h in the expression of the integral.
