Question

Please provide the calculaion step.

What is the wave energy flux (Ef) in kW/m of a wave with a significant wave height (Hsig) of 3.2 metres and energy period (Te) of 9 seconds in deep sea water? Use the formula: Ef = rho g2 . H sig2 . Te / (64 pi) where g is the acceleration due to gravity and rho is the density of sea water (1026 kg/m3). Following Question 2, what capture length (m) of a Wave Energy Conversion System with an overall energy efficiency of 30% would be needed to generate 1 MW of electrical power from such a wave?

Explanation / Answer

a)Ef =*g*g*h*h*t/64

=1026*9.8*9.8*3.2*3.2*9/64

= 45166.052 w/m

= 45.166KW/m

b)for finding height

efficiency = output/input

input = output/efficiency

   input=1000/0.3 in kw

            =3333.3 kw

Ef is directly proportional to h*h

Ef2/Ef1 = h2^2/h1^2

3333.33/45.166     = h2^2 / 3.2*3.2

h2 = 27.49 metres
