It will block the blood supply to brain and generate local hypoxia along with prolonged scarcity of oxygen and nutrients. In order to eliminate this molecular stress, local inflammation will increase in this brain area in order to dissolve the plaque by accumulating phagocytes so that the blocking could be cleared. However, since the blocking/plaque could not be removed, it will generate local edema formation in this area of brain. Formation of cerebral edema increases cranial pressure and damages the neurons due to mechanical stress. As neurons die, they do not transmit signal and become dead gradually. These events will lead to generation of a stroke which can be lethal if untreated.
