Question

BEFORE SOLVING THE PROBLEM, please explain to me why the setup circuit on chegg ASSSUMES that the 8V and 3V are in series?

I am really confused about that because I though that for any element to be in series, one END of each element has to DIRECTLY connect to each other, with NO OTHER JUNCTION in between.

But in this circuit problem, the 2 ohm resistor and 3A current source is directly in between the 8V and 3V voltage source, so HOW IS IT THAT THE 2 VOLTAGE SOURCE are in SERIES???

Here's what I mean:

Please explain clearly why is that the 8V and 3V are in series BEFORE solving the circuit problem.

Thank you!

Explanation / Answer

yes ,series means end to end but look here 8V ,3V and 2ohm are in series so talking about voltage two sources are considered in series series and paralle combination are decided depending on which two points are you looking at . rest of question is same as you have shown after rearranging the circuit. calculate i1 and i2 i1= -.375(opposite to assumed ) i2=-2.125 power = (i2)^2*R = 9.03125 power = (i1)^2*R=.28125
