Question

Given the work done on character displacement (bill or beak size) of Darwin's Finches in the Galapagos Islands, explain how you would test for the same pattern in sympatric Felid species in South America. Here, up to four species of wild cats can be found in the same piece of forest, and are from largest to smallest: jaguar, puma, ocelot and jaguarundi. Design a natural experiment in which you test for the strength of interspecific competition. Explain what you would expect to find in different assemblages or degrees of sympatry. For example, what would you expect to see different about the Jaguar in different sympatric vs. allopatric scenarios?

Explanation / Answer

Ans.) Darwin's finches on the Galápagos Islands are particularly suitable to analyse and interpret the evolutionary adaptation and the multiplication of species.. All 14 species of Darwin's finches are closely related, having been derived from a common ancestor 2 million to 3 million years ago. Darwin's finches is is example of repeated speciation in allopatric speciation.

The given four specie of cats have charater displacement due to the sympartic speciation as they found in the same forest. Hence it is not due to the allopartic speciation.

In sympatric speciation, the new species advance from a solitary hereditary animal categories while possessing the same geographic locale. In developmental science, sympatric and sympatry are terms indicates to life forms who are nearly similar and they lived together in any event in a few places.

Degree of symparty varies due to various causes like, diffenrece in climatic conditions, topographic condition, gene flow etc.

In case of Jaguar, as we know that allopatric speciation or geographic speciation results when a jaguar’s opulation is separated by a physical barrier. On the other hand, sympatric speciation occurs without physical separation of members of the population. It depends on the contitions in which the subject inhabitat.
