Question

this is a question made up by the prof. out of ch 7,8,9 and mabe some from ch11 from Mechanics of Materials 7th edition by James M Gere and Barry J. Goodno.

A weight of W=45KN is hung eccentrically from the end of a cantileavered pipe of length L=750mm as shown in the Figure. the OUTSIDE DIAMETER D=250mm, thickness t=6mm and the fluid in the pipe has a pressure P=3.5MPa. Treat the pipe as a cylindrical pressure vessel. Analyze all stresses, draw the mohr's circles, and determin the maximum normal and shear stresses at points (a) A and (b) B.

Explanation / Answer

it looks like it has a shear stress due to twisting,Tr/J. Its gonna have stress in the x and y direction. for the x direction, pr/t, for y, pr/2t. Mohr circle shouldnt be hard once you find these stresses.
