Question
Use the following word bank to fill in the blanks in the passage below regarding prokaryotic translation (not all answers will be used): Translation in prokaryotes is initiated when _ binds to the 30 S subunit of a ribosome which recognizes the _ sequence of an mRNA. Next, an initiator f Met-tRNA, that contains a _ group, gets bound by _ and GTP and binds to the first AUG in the mRNA. After all of the initiation factors dissociate and GTP is hydrolyzed, the _ associates with the small ribosomal subunit. Next, a tRNA, bound by the elongation factor _ and GTP, binds to the _ site of the large ribosomal subunit, leading to the hydrolysis of GTP and dissociation of the elongation factor. A _ bond is formed between the amino acids on the tRNAs and the ribosome shifts forward 3 nucleotides with help from EF-G. This process continues until the ribosome gets to a stop codon, at which point _ binds to the stop codon and _ binds to the large ribosomal subunit, which leads to the disassembly of the complex.Explanation / Answer
Translation in prokaryotes is initiated when 50S subunit binds to the 30S subunit of a ribosome which recognizes the methyl sequence of mRNA. Next, an initiator fMet-tRNA, that contains a formyl group, gets bound by IF-2, IF-3 and GTP and bind to the first AUG in the mRNA. After all the initiation factors dissociate and GTP is hydrolyzed, the Shine-Dalgarno associates with small ribosomal subunit. Next, a tRNA bound by the elongation factor EF-Tu and GTP, binds to the P site of the large ribosomal subunit leading to hydrolysis of GTP and disassociation of elongation factor. A peptide bond is formed between the amino acids on the tRNA and the ribosomes shifts forward three nucleotides with help from EF-G. This process continues until the ribosome gets a stop codon, at which RF-1/RF-2 binds to the stop codon and RF-3 binds to the large ribosomal subunit, which leads to disassembly of the complex.
