Question

A load of 7.6 kN acts at right angles to the beam AB. The angle of the beam to a horizontal x axis at A is 55. The supports are a pin joint at A and a Rocker at B.

A load of 7.6 kN acts at right angles to the beam AB. The angle of the beam to a horizontal x axis at A is 55. The supports are a pin joint at A and a Rocker at B. The Shear Force in kN at C rounded to 2 DP is ANS 61 [ ]kN.m The Bending Moment in kN.m at C rounded to 2 DP is ANS 62 [ ]kN.m The magnitude of the vertical reaction inkN at A rounded to DP is ANS 63 [ ]kN The direction of the reaction at A from a positive x axis is AND 64 [ ] degree The axial force in kN at C rounded to 2 DP is ANS 65 [ ] kN

Explanation / Answer

All you have to do is draw the FBD's and find your equilibrium equations. Make sure you do the fbd of the whole beam first and find your reaction equations, then section the pieces. Just make sure you have the angles right and include all forces, not forgetting that the reaction force at B has only one component since it is a rocker (i had this problem earlier this year and i treated b like a pin and it gave me some grief). Depending on how you think about these problems it might be easier to set your y axis parallel to the beam when doing section a-a because your normal force will be in the axis, but it doesnt matter as long as you get all of your trig right for each force.
