Question

What is buoyancy? What is the direction of the buoyancy force? Briefly explain why the buoyancy force acts in this direction Suppose a thin plastic bag containing 200 cm3 of hot water at 90 degree C is held submerged in a tank of cold water at 20 degree C . Assume that the weight and volume of the thin plastic bag are negligible and that the hot and cold water temperatures are controlled and kept constant (90 degree C and 20 degree C , respectively). Determine the buoyancy force acting on the bag of hot water. Determine the net force acting on the bag of hot water. Is the force pushing the bag up or down? What will happen if tire bag is released? The density of water is 998.2 kg/m3 at 20 degree C and 965.3 kg/m3 at 90 degree C . The acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s2.

Explanation / Answer

(a)buoyancy is a force exerted by a liquid, gas or other fluid, that opposes an object's weight.

The buoyance force acts in the upward direction.

When a body is immersed in water, the liquid exerts pressure from all directions. This pressure increases with the increase in depth. Therefore, the fluid at the lower part of the body exerts higher pressure than the fluid on the top part. This creates a net pressure difference which pushes the body in upward direction. This is the buoyancy force.

(b) buoyancy force= cold water g Vdiplaced liquid=998.2x9.81x(200x10-6)=1.958 N

(c) weight of bag= hot water g Vbag= 965.3x9.81x(200x10-6) =1.894 N

net force=1.894-1.958=-.064 N

the direction of force is in the upward direction
