Question

you must determine the ground clearance of an overheadelectrical cable.surveyor B is positioned directly under the cable(surveyor B's position can be checked by his sighting past thesting of a plumb bob, held in his outstreched hand, to thecable);surveyor A sets her clino meter 45 degree and then backsaway from surveyor B until the overhead electrical cable is on thecross hair of the leveled clinometer.at this point, surveyors A andB determine the distance between them to be 61.5 ft .surveyor Athen sets the clinometer to 0 degree and sights surveyor B ; thishorizantal line of sight cuts surveyor B at a distance 4.3 ft abovethe ground . dtermine the ground clearance of the electricalcable you must determine the ground clearance of an overheadelectrical cable.surveyor B is positioned directly under the cable(surveyor B's position can be checked by his sighting past thesting of a plumb bob, held in his outstreched hand, to thecable);surveyor A sets her clino meter 45 degree and then backsaway from surveyor B until the overhead electrical cable is on thecross hair of the leveled clinometer.at this point, surveyors A andB determine the distance between them to be 61.5 ft .surveyor Athen sets the clinometer to 0 degree and sights surveyor B ; thishorizantal line of sight cuts surveyor B at a distance 4.3 ft abovethe ground . dtermine the ground clearance of the electricalcable

Explanation / Answer

you must determine the ground clearance of an overhead electricalcable.surveyor B is positioned directly under the cable (surveyorB's position can be checked by his sighting past the sting of aplumb bob, held in his outstreched hand, to the cable); ground clearance = surveyor B height + vertical elevation ofelectrical cable surveyor A sets her clino meter 45 degree and then backs away fromsurveyor B until the overhead electrical cable is on the cross hairof the leveled clinometer.at this point, surveyors A and Bdetermine the distance between them to be 61.5 ft if clino meter reads line of sight distance from A to cable elevation distance from A to overhead electrical cable 61.5ft *sin(45 deg) = 43.49 ft .surveyor A then sets the clinometer to 0 degree and sightssurveyor B ; this horizantal line of sight cuts surveyor B at adistance 4.3 ft above the ground . dtermine the ground clearance ofthe electrical cable ground clearance = surveyor B height + vertical elevation ofelectrical cable                            = 4.3ft                +          43.49 ft   =    47.79 ft I claim no expertise in surveying. This just seems reasonablefrom the data. Alternately, if the clino meter reads the horizontal distance fromA to cable ground clearance = surveyor B height + vertical elevation ofelectrical cable surveyor A sets her clino meter 45 degree and then backs away fromsurveyor B until the overhead electrical cable is on the cross hairof the leveled clinometer.at this point, surveyors A and Bdetermine the distance between them to be 61.5 ft elevation distance from A to overhead electrical cable 61.5ft *tan(45 deg) = 61.5 ft .surveyor A then sets the clinometer to 0 degree and sightssurveyor B ; this horizantal line of sight cuts surveyor B at adistance 4.3 ft above the ground . dtermine the ground clearance ofthe electrical cable ground clearance = surveyor B height + vertical elevation ofelectrical cable                            = 4.3ft                +          61.5 ft   =   65.8 ft And a similar result of 65.8 ft is gained from the clino metergiving the vertical distance or elevation between A and thecable. I am also not sure how the height of surveyor B should behandled. Since the clino meter at angle is targeted at thecable and not the surveyor, I am assuming the data recorded isabout the cable that is lifted or held by surveyor B. How theheight correction should be made upward or downward is anassumption I am making. Since B is holding the cable abovehim, I am assuming the height of B must be added.
