Question

(Solving for the Axial stress of BD)

I attempted to solve this problem using this formula: fv=axial force/parallel resisting area

I took the Nominal values for the inner diameter cone of 1'' and outer diameter of 2'' for 1.049 and 2.375 and added them together to get 3.424

Then i used the formula *d2 /4 to get 9.207*.25(3' converted to inches)=2.3

Then I took 10000=2.3=4344.12

The Axial stress of BD is supposted to be 4237psi. Not sure what went wrong here. Help?

Any additional help inCD and Pin C are greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance. And I will rate asap!

Explanation / Answer

Draw an FBD of AD,BD and DC. Determine angles Then use equilibrium equation sum of forces in Y direction. -10,000lbs + AD(sin of angle)=0. Since AD will = DC omit DC from equation. Solve for AD then divide by 1in^2. Next Determine cross sectional area of pin C. Divide P (from previous problem) by area of pin C then divide by 2 since it is double shear acting on the pin.
