Herbicide resistance and insect resistance were the first two traits to be introduced into widely grown, genetically modified (GM), crops. Discuss one of these, giving an account of the basis of resistance, the strategy for producing the GM plants, and any issues which have arisen as a result of the exploitation of this technology Write an essay on "The potential for producing valuable pharmaceutical proteins using genetically modified plants 4.

Explanation / Answer

1. genetically modified crops are the crops produced by modifying the DNA of the crop using genetic engineering. genetically modified crops are produced with aim to get the superior quality crop. it aims to introduce the traits which are not present in the crop. these traits are mainly used to increase the resistance of crop and to make it disease free.

some important traits which are added in a crop are herbicide resistance, insect resistance, disease resistance and resistance towards the spoilage of the crop. out of various other traits, herbicide resistance traits are added in all the genetically modified crops.

herbicide is a chemical used to remove the unwanted plants. they are used to remove weeds grown along with the economically important crops. spraying herbicides have side effects. when they are sprayed in large amount on the crop, it not only destroy the weed but also destroy the main crops.

thus, herbicide resistance is a trait added to a crop to help them to withstand the high dosage of herbicide added on the crop. herbicide resistance save the crop from the harmful impact of the herbicides.

to produce the resistance crop, the DNA from a plant having resistance is extracted and incorporated to the DNA of a main plant. this plant is allowed to reproduce so that traits can be transferred to next generation. seeds formed by genetically modified plants are allowed to grow and the herbicide resistance crop is formed.

genetically modified crops have unoredictable side effects. they can cause allergies to the people consuming the crop. they also cause allergies to the farmers taking care of crops. this can also cause various defects and disorders. it may cause toxicity, infertility and immunity related disorders.
