TO START: SOME BASIC QUESTIONS

You can find the answers to the questions in the Biology Major's Handbook on the TU Website(https://www.towson.edu/fcsm/departments/biology/resources/documents/bio-mjrs-hndbk.pdf), specifically under the heading “Off-Campus Coursework.” You should read that first. Other information is available at various websites, links to which are provided for you on above.

1. TU’s Study Abroad Office offers short, helpful information sessions on studying abroad. According to their website, when and where are these sessions held?

2. TU’s Study Abroad Office holds “Study Abroad Fairs” at the University Union. When is the next fair? If this information is not available on their website, please call or email them and ask.

3. If you have a financial aid package, can you use your financial aid to take coursework away from TU?

4. Briefly describe what a student does if they participate in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program. See the links on the course website that deal with the NSE program.

5. What does it cost to participate in NSE? (Check TU’s NSE website under “Costs” – don’t forget

        any program fees.)

6. Review the list of universities that participate in NSE. (To look at your options, see the link on the course website that takes you to TU’s NSE site. On that website you will find a link to NSE’s main webpage. Go there and click on “Member Campus Profiles.”) Of all the choices, to which university would you most like to go for a semester? Explain why.

continued below

On the next pages, you are asked to describe TWO different opportunities for doing coursework away from TU, other than participation in the National Student Exchange program.

HOWEVER, pay attention to the following:

Students with the Functional Biology of Animals, Cellular and Molecular Biology, or Secondary Science Education concentrations must describe two international opportunities.

Students with the Organismal Biology and Ecology concentration must describe one international study abroad opportunity and one opportunity that involves taking field courses during the summer.

Regarding field courses: The Organization of Biological Field Stations maintains a website where they list available summer field courses. A link to this site is on the Biol 204 course website. To find a list of courses, go to the OBFS website, click on Field Courses on the right side of the page, and then scroll down and click on "Field station courses & their next scheduled offerings." Note, however, that at certain times of the year courses are not listed. If that is the case, you'll want to use an alternative strategy for finding a field course. Here are a couple of options:

1. Do a Google search using keywords such as "summer field course mammalogy" or "field course stream ecology."

2. The OBFS website has a list of all Field stations, most of which offer summer field courses. This list can be found right next to the link mentioned above for field courses. (See "List & map of member stations.") Pick out one of the field stations that you might be interested in visiting. For example, if you've always wanted to see the Rocky Mountains, then look for field sites located in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, etc. Do an internet search to find the home websites of the field stations you chose. See if they are offering any summer courses. If they are, they will be featured prominently on the website. Are any of interest to you?

ALSO, FOR ALL STUDENTS: When identifying international “study abroad” opportunities, please understand that, when you study abroad, you are not required or even expected to take any science courses. Indeed, it often makes more sense to take courses that fulfill Core requirements. For example, a student who goes to London should really consider taking courses in, say, art, history, theater or Shakespeare to take advantage of the incredible museums, historic sites, and theatres that London has to offer. Let’s face it: a course in endocrinology in London is going to be pretty similar to the endocrinology course you can take back at TU!

You are expected to take a considerable amount of time exploring the many, many different options you have for off-campus coursework. Do not simply choose a couple of the first few opportunities you encounter. Make this assignment valuable to you.

OPPORTUNITY #1

1. If there is an official “name” for the opportunity that you have chosen, please state it. Also, if there is a sponsoring organization, university, etc., please name it.

Paste in the link here for the program’s main webpage:

2. Indicate where you would go, when you might go, and how long the experience would last

(summer? minimester? semester? a full academic year?).

3. Explain why you are choosing this particular opportunity.

4. Indicate what course(s) you might take. Be as specific as possible. That is, if a list of potential courses is available, then give both course name and number for courses that would be of interest to you.

Paste in the link here for the program’s list of potential courses:

5. Provide a summary of the approximate costs.

Paste in the link here for the program’s list of costs:

6. a) If this is an international opportunity, scan the list of different types of financial aid available through TU for such opportunities (see link on course website). List any and all sources of financial aid available and, if you can, the amount available from each source. CAUTION: Do NOT simply cut and paste the full list of sources of financial aid one can get through TU. List ONLY those that seem like they would apply to this program. Look carefully at each type of scholarship and see if it would apply to you and the opportunity you chose. A complete list is expected.

     b) Does the program itself list other scholarships or fellowships to help students participate in the program? If so, what is available?

7. Indicate whether you found this opportunity through TU’s Study Abroad Office webpages OR through your own web search, or both.

OPPORTUNITY #2

1. If there is an official “name” for the opportunity that you have chosen, please state it. Also, if there is a sponsoring organization, university, etc., please name it.

FINALLY…What did you learn from doing this assignment that you didn’t already know?

Were there any big surprises? Did you find anything particularly intriguing?

If you are interested in "seeing the world" (or at least some new part of it!) then there may be no better chance to do this than when you are an undergraduate. There are abundant opportunities available to TU students to study elsewhere in the U.S., in North America, or overseas. One can do this in the summer or during the regular academic year. You can take courses in Biology and/or take Core courses (e.g., art, literature, language, culture, sociology) specialized for the area to which you travel. In this assignment, you will explore different options for taking coursework somewhere other than TU There is a "template" for this assignment that contains questions to answer and lists other information to provide. As usual, you will download the template document, save it with a new name, complete the work, and submit the document to your instructor by Blackboard. You are first asked to answer some basic questions about conducting coursework away from TU. You can find some of the answers to these questions in your Biology Major's Handbook(https://www.towson.edu/fcsm/departments/biology/lresources/documents/bio-mjrs- hndbk.pdf), specifically under the heading "Off-Campus Coursework." You should read that first. Other information is available at various websites, links to which are provided for you on the course website. You will need to visit each of these sites You are then asked to find and describe two different opportunities for conducting coursework off- campus and away from Baljimore either during the summer or during the regular academic year. You are expected to take a considerable amount of time exploring the many, many different options you have for off-campus coursework.
