Question
A large tank is used to calibrate the reading from a flow meter. Measurements of the system weight as a function of time are made. Water enters the tank vertically from the flow metering system at a speed of 20 ft/sec through a 1.5 in. diameter pipe. If the weight of the empty tank is 50 lbs, determine the scale reading at t=10 sec. What is the true weight of the water and tank at 10 sec? NEED THE SECOND PART TO THIS SOLUTION PLEASE Mass flow rate of water, m = ?AV where ? is Density of water = 62.4 lb/ft3 A is Area of pipe = ?(1.5/12)2/4 = 0.01226 ft2. V is velocity of flow = 20 ft/sec. Putting values, m = 62.4 * 0.01226 * 20 = 15.3075 lb/sec At t= 10 sec, mass of water = 10 * 15.3075 = 153.075 lb. Weight of water at t = 10 sec, W = 153.075 lb-f. True weight of water and tank = 153.07 + 50 = 203.07 lb-f.Explanation / Answer
from continuity eqution Q = A*V so from here we get discharge as V is given and A(area of cross section can be found out using pi/4 * D^2) so volume of water in 10 sec = Q *10 weight = Q*10*p ( where p is density of water) so now we have weight of water add weight of tank to it to get the scale reading
