Question

Salty water flows steadily into an open 1000 liter tank initially filled completely with fresh water.
The salt water mixes thoroughly with the fresh water and the mixture overflows out of the tank. If the flow rate out of the tank is 60 liters/minute. Assume freshwater is 1000 kg/m^3, and the salty water is 1020 kg/m^3.

determine the time (in seconds) to obtain a density of 1005 kg/m^3 ?

Explanation / Answer

Volume of water in the tank is constant.

Change in density = 5kg/m3

Total salt added by salt water inflow = 5kg

Amount salt water to be added to achieve this:

20 kg salt is present in 1m3 salt water.

5kg salt corresponds to 0.25 m3 or 250 lit. salt water input.

Outflow rate = inflow rate [since the tank is already filled up.]

Inflow rate = 60 lit/min.

Time taken to input 250 lit = 250/60 min. = 4min. 10sec.
