Question

7) one way of understanding a capacitor: is a device that won't let the voltage between two points change too rapidly, because it stores up charge and has v "QIC The charge cannot be changed instantaneously, so the voltage cannot either. Try to describe an inductor in a similar way, i.e. say what cannot be changed rapidly and why 8) The current in an electromagnet of inductance 1.6H is 8.8A. a) What energy is stored in its magnetic field at this current? b) If the current was turned off and fell to zero in 2 what average back emf would be produced?

Explanation / Answer

7) Inductor opposes change in current in the similar fashion. As the current change, flux changes which cause counter emf and hence producing counter current. So inductor opposes instantenous change in current.

8) (a) Energy stored = 0.5LI2 = 0.5x1.6x(8.8)2 = 61.952 Joule

(b)Back Emf produced = -L(di/dt) = 1.6(8.8/25x10-3) = 563.2 volts
