Question

Ice cubes submerged at the bottom of a liquid indicate that the liquid is less dense than ice. is warmer than the ice. is only partly displaced by the submerged ice. produces insufficient buoyant force on the ice. Two life preservers have identical volumes, but one is filled with Styrofoam while the other is filled with sand. When the two life preservers are fully submerged, the buoyant force is greater on the one filled with sand. same on each as long as their volumes are the same Styrofoam. Compared to an empty ship, the same ship loaded with Styrofoam will float lower in the water. higher in the water. at the same level in the water. The amount of water displaced by a liter-sized block of ordinary wood floating in water is depends on the water density 1 liter. more than 1 liter. less than 1 liter. none of the above When your float in fresh water, the buoyant force that acts on you is equal to your weight. When you float higher in the denser water of the Dead Sea, the buoyant force that acts on you is equal to your weight. greater than your weight. less than your weight. A floating ice cube contains small pieces of iron. The water level after melting will rise. remain unchanged. fall. When an ice cube in a glass of water melts, the water level remains the same. falls. rises.

Explanation / Answer

19) Is less dense than ice

Ice will floating if the weight of displaced liquid is equal to the weight of ice. volume of ice and volume of diaplaced liquid are same and still the ice cubes went bottom means that the density is less for liquid and not able to provide enough buoyancy force for ice.

20) same for both

The buoyancy force is equal to the amount of displaced water. When the two volumes are same then the volume of displaced water is also same then the buoyancy forces are also same.

21) Higher in water

As the mass of the ship is getting increased then it should displace more water in order to balance its weight with buoyancy force. So it should go more deeper in the water.

22) The wood will never completely under water as we know that it always floats in water. So the volume of water displaced is always less than one litre.

23) Equal to the weight

Buoynacy force is maximum and its value is equal to its weight. Depending on the density the level of object inside the water may change.

24) Fall

If the ice cube contains iron pieces before melting then it will displacing the water having weight of both ice and iron. After melting, the ice will be converted as water and there is no change in water level (see the answer of 25) and iron pieces will go bottom and settle. Now, the water will not be displaced because of iron pieces. The water level decreases than initial one.

25) Remains the same

If the ice cube is floating on the surface of water then it displaces the water given by its volume i.e.

displaced water volume = mass/density

In second way, if that ice melts, then the volume of the water coming from ice v =m/d

same as first one. So there is no change in water level when an floating ice cube melting in a glass beaker.
