Question

i. In the space provided, show that the shape of the spring at t= 0.3 s is not consistent with the correct boundary condition for this case.

ii. Note that the peak of the pulse is drawn as a sharp "kink" in the spring. How does this "kink" lead to the inconsistency mentioned above?

addressed in the next problem. t = 0.0 s! (1 square- 10 cm) Consider again the situation from part d, in which a pulse with a speed of 1.0 m/s is incident on the free end of a spring. e. Free end i. In the space provided, show that the shape of the spring at t = 0.3 s (determined by using your model for free-end reflection) is not consistent with the correct boundary condition for this case. t = 0.3 s (1 square = 10 cm) Note that the peak of the pulse is drawn as a sharp "kink" in the spring. How does this "kink" lead to the inconsistency mentioned above? ii.

Explanation / Answer

In 0.3 seconds, it should travel 0.3 metres or 30 cm. Therefore the kink should be right at the pole.

First of all the shape of the wave is notsymmetrical.

Secondly, the shape is not differentiable, unlike sinusoidal waves which are differentiable. This leads to the mentioned inconsistency.
