Short answers questions (2-3 sentences) HVAC questions
Q1)Could evaporative cooling applied in place like Florida where humidity in summer is high?
Q2) Linear air diffusers provide good mixing between supply air and room air. Can we use them for displacement ventilation? Why or why not?
Q3) In an HVAC system for large commercial buildings, energy is consumed by both the primary (central heating and cooling plant) and secondary (air handlers) system, describe the steps/strategy you would take to calculate the annual energy consumption.
Explanation / Answer
(1) No, for a place where humidity is high in summer evaporative cooling would be not very effective because this technique utilizes high enthalpy of water to absorb ambient heat. But since the air is already quite saturated with water (high humidity) at ambient temperature, evaporative cooling would hardly extract any heat from the surroundings.
(2) No, because in displacement ventilation fresh air is supplied near the floor, which rises up as it get heated to the top of the space, where it is directly removed (unlike mixing in Linear air diffusers). This air then doesnt re-enter the zone. DV supplies air at a lower velocity, thereby reducing pressure & energy requirements.
(3) The HVAC system installation in large building should be a team decision to optimize the use of energy for the required purpose. Annual energy consumption can be optimized by using a combination of DV & mixed air-flow systems. For summer time, cooling plant & air handlers will be active and for winters heating plant & air handlers will be active. Assuming optimized insulation, energy consumption should be generally higher in winter than summer, since heating plant would be operational.
