Question

List problems in design that you have encountered that you think could be solved by a Human factors specialist. Describe why each is a problem. b. A case where the perceptual limitations of the human were not fully considered (e.g., not being able to localize the sound of a fire truck siren so you can get out of its way).

DISCUSSION:-

Problem-1: While designing an automotive clutch pedal in a manual transmission vehicle used mostly in the east, the effort required by a human leg to comfortably operate the pedal was not considered. As a result of this, the driver was getting exhausted fast, at times was not pushing the clutch pedal sufficiently to change gears and was lacking concentration for driving. This was a highly unsafe situation for the driver and other vehicles and might cause accidents. This dangerous situation could have been averted if the designer would have considered the opinion of a human factors specialist about taking the right effort required by an average human to press the clutch pedal while changing gears.

Problem-2: Some special vehicles used in the army require the use of armor from the inside the vehicle to protect the troops from balistic attack. In these vehicles due to the armor, sufficient air conditioning and ventilation is not considered by the designer. This situation requires the opinion of a human factor specialist to consider comfortable ventilation and air conditioner design for the troops in the vehicle.
