Question
Estimate the condenser cooling water requirements for a 600-MWe power plant if the water undergoes a 15 degree C temperature rise and determine the solid waste generated in short tons/year of full-power operation, if; The system is a coal-fired system burning Alabama. Jefferson, St. Clair coal, an ash fraction of 8.3%, and a sulfer fraction of 5.1%, assume that the system uses a throwaway FGD systems using CaCO3 as the feed material. Assume the overall plant efficiency is 40% and the boiler efficiency is 82%.Explanation / Answer
GIVEN:- T = 15C, Power generated P = 600 MW, Ash fraction fa = 8.3%, Sulfer fraction fs = 5.1%, Overall plant efficiency Ep = 40% and Boiler efficiency Eb = 82%
TO-FIND:- Condensed cooling water flow rate Qw and Solid waste generated Sw tons/year = ?
SOLUTION:- Specific heat of water (C) = 4181 J/Kg.C
By formula P = Mw x C x T i.e. 600 x 10^6 = Mw x 4181 x 15 i.e. Mw = (600 x 10^6) / (4181 x 15) = 9567.1 kg/s
Since density of water = 1 kg/litre , So Qs = Mw / d = 9567.1/1 = 9567.1 litres/sec
So Condensed cooling water flow rate required Qs = 9.57 Klitres/sec = 151640 Gallons/min (ANSWER)
Since Eb = 82%, the amount of steam power required i.e. input = 600x10^6 / 0.82 = 731.71x10^6 Watts
And since Ep = 40%, amount of fuel power required i.e. input = 731.71x10^6 / 0.4 = 182.93x10^7 Watts
Since calorific value of coal = 20000 KJ/kg,
Amount of coal required per sec = 182.93x10^7 / 20000x10^3 = 91.5 kg/s
So Mc = 91.5 x (365x24x3600) = 2885544000 kg/year = 2885544 tons/year
Now solid waste generated per year = Sw = Mc x (fa + fs) = 2885544 x 0.134 = 386663 tons/year
So solid waste generated per year Sw = 386.66 Kilotonnes (ANSWER)
