Atoms are mainly composed of protons, neutrons and electrons. Atomic mass is the mass of an atom (The collection of masses of all the neutrons, protons and electrons in a single atom). As the masses of atoms are extremely small, they are expressed in unit called atomic mass unit (amu). 1 amu is equal to the one twelfth of the mass of a C-12 isotope.

Atomic Weight

There can be several isotopes for a single element. Atomic weight is the average weight calculated considering all the masses of isotopes. Each isotope is present in the environment in different percentages. When calculating the atomic weight, both isotope mass and their relative abundances are taken into consideration.

IUPAC definition for the atomic weight is as follows:

“An atomic weight (relative atomic mass) of an element from a specified source is the ratio of the average mass per atom of the element to 1/12 of the mass of an atom of 12C.”
