In other cases, the specimen is taken by a nurse on the patient's floor and just the specimen is sent to the lab with an order form requesting various tests After a specimen arrives in the lab, a laboratory assistant reads the orders to determine which tests are to be performed. He or she may have to call requesting physicians because he or she cannot read their handwriting or to notify them if there will be an inordinate delay in obtaining the results of the tests. The assistant then obtains the needed supplies, e.g., slides, chemicals, test tubes, etc., and readies any required equipment. Some tests are very simple while others are complex and require mul tiple steps. The procedures are specified in department lab manuals. In many cases, the tests are au- tomated. A specimen is simply placed in the test equipment and the results are read from various indicators on the machine, or printed out by the machine. A time and materials card is filled out for each test and forwarded to Central Accounting for billing and inventory control. The results of each test are checked against a "norm chart" to determine if the test indicates any abnormalities. The results are transcribed onto lab report forms. One copy of the lab report is sent to the requesting physician, one copy goes to own file. Room to be placed in the patient's hospital file, and one copy is placed in the laboratory This more or less orderly process is often interrupted when a "stat" order is received.
