Question
Electrons and holes An electron is excited from the valence band into the conduction band by a photon as shown in figure 2 below. The hole is 0.2 eVbelow the valence band maximum, while the generated electron is 0.2 eV above the conduction band minimum. Assume for simplicity that the electron and hole effective mass values for this material are me* = 0.19 me. The bandgap of this semiconductor is 1.4 eV. What was the energy and wavelength of the photon? Would this be in the infra-red, visible, or UV region of the spectrum? What is the kinetic energy of the electron and of the hole?Explanation / Answer
The energy of the photon is the total energy transition which is 1.4+0.2+0.2=1.8eV
Wavelength can be found out by E=hc/l whre l is the wavelength=6.9 x 10^-7m.It is visible light.
Kinetic energy of the electron is 0.2eV and same of the hole.
