Question

In this problem, we are going to model the volume of air in a person’s lungs.

(a) Calculate the amount of time it takes for one of the group members to take a breath: from starting inhalation to the end of exhalation. 1 full breath is 4.5 seconds

(b) Assume that the maximum amount you can breathe in is .5 Liters per second. What function should you use to model the amount of air you are breathing in at a given moment? Assume that you are breathing involuntary, and are ‘at rest’.

(c) What equation models the total volume of air in your lungs as a function of time? How did you arrive at this answer?

Explanation / Answer

(A). Normal ratio of time taken for inspiration to expiration at rest or asleep is 1:2. Therefore here inspiration is of 1.5 second and expiration will be of 3 seconds.

(B). Tidal volume is 500 ml at rest .which is the volume of air knspired by a person in a normal inspiration after a normal exiration.

(C). Total volume of air in lungs is vital capacity +residual volume which is 4800+ 1200 =6000 ml.
