Question
Section 5.1.3 Moving, Nondeforming Control Volume For an automobile moving along a highway at 70 mph where air is now incompressible, describe the control volume you would use to estimate the flowrate of air across the radiator. Explain how you would estimate the velocity of that air. Assume that the pressure is the same throughout going through the radiator. List the steps to equations and assumptions needed to solve the problem. Then assume the radiator dimensions are 21.5X17.5 and 1 inch wide with half of its area being where air able to flow through the holes of the radiator. Please help if possible.Explanation / Answer
as the car is travelling at 70mph so the control volume is moving at 70 mph
and if we assume wind speed is negligible wrt to that speed we can calculate the flow rate of wind by assuming wind speed to be 70mph wrt to control volume.
The control volume is the cuboid enclosing the radiator but with area only half since the air can only flow through the holes in radiator.
volume flow rate=21.5*17.5*0.5*1*31.2928
=5886.958 m3/s
