Question
You are given a mixture of two bacteria populations (pop A and popB) in a test tube. One of the populations of bacteria is E.Coli.After performing a gram staining tests, the results show that thebacteria population A, is reddish clear rods; and bacteriapopulation B, is purple dots.a) What does this test tell you about bacteria population A andB?
b) What caused the purple color stain to stay on the bacteria? (Bespecific about the component of the cell)
c) Based on these results, which population is E.coli (A or B)?
Explanation / Answer
B) What caused the purple stain to stay on the bacteria wasthe peptidoglycan layer present in pop B, which is why it took upthe crystal violet stain. Pop A has a peptidoglycan layer aswell but does not hold the stain due to the outer layer containinglipopolysaccharides.
C) Pop A is the E. coli because E. coli are long rods and theround ones would be a coccus of sorts. Beyond that gramnegative bacteria are many times, but not always, pathogenic. And if the E. Coli were a pathogenic variety, well there yougo.
