Question

While completing your homework, compute the energy consumed by your study space. Set the control volume as the amount of the room you are using. For lighting, estimate the wattages of the bulbs you see as follows: 60 W for incandescent, 15 W for compact fluorescent, 40 W for each 4 foot fluorescent tube. For heating, say 1 kW is devoted to your personal needs. Look up or estimate the power consumption of various appliances with the help of page 70 in MacKay (available on bSpace), which includes data for devices that are plugged in but not turned on. Estimate it takes you 2 hours to finish. Remember to include your cell phone! Look up the voltage and capacity of your phone and estimate the number of days the battery lasts. For example, if my 3.7V Li-ion battery has a 1000 mAh capacity and I have to charge it once per day, I have (3.7V)*(1Ah) = 3.7Wh, so the device is consuming 3.7/24 = 0.154 W on average. List all sources of energy consumption and their associated power. Give a total in kW. At S0.12/kWh, how much did it cost? Say your roommate complains about the cold weather we are finally starting to experience. How much would you expect the monthly PG&E; bill to increase if he/she were to purchase a 3 kW space heater? Assume it is on for 10 hrs a day. List several ways you could cut down on this energy expenditure. "Have less homework assigned" is not an acceptable answer.

Explanation / Answer

3kw =3000 watt, total kwh = 10hr *30*3 = 900KWH, 0.12/kwh = 900*0.12 = 108$ (increase)
