Question
In class, you had sketched an image of an octahedral site in bcc iron. Use the atomic radius of Fe (0.124 nm) to calculate the number of octahedral sites per cc in a single crystal of 1018 steel at room temperature. Assume that each octahedral site can be occupied by only one carbon atom at a time. The carbon concentration can be expressed in terms of the number density of filled octahedral sites. For example carbon might occupy 1 octahedral site out of x total octahedral sites; where x depends on the wt% carbon in steel. Calculate x for a single crystal of 1018 steel. Compare your answer if 1080 steel is considered instead. Assume the bulk density of both alloys is 7.84 g/cc.Explanation / Answer
