Question

In a lichen, the fungal partner is most often alan) [a] (ascomycete/basidiomycete/glomeromycete) and provides minerals and [b] (food/water) in the relationship. The other partner is either a cyanobacteria or [c] (brown/green /red) algae that does [d] (name the biological process) and provides food in the form of carbohydrates and other organic molecules. Recently, it has been found that there is a third partner in many lichens. This member is a [e] (cup fungus / mold / yeast) from the group Basidiomycetes

Explanation / Answer

lichens are symbiont associates of bacteria i.e cyanobacteria or blue green algae and fungi.

The fungal component of lichen is called mycobiont whereas bacterial component are called phycobiont.

a) An Ascomycete- its memebers are commonly known as sac fungi or ascomycetes. they are the largest phylum or division over 64000 species.

Majority of the lichen are of ascomycete about 98% and very few belongs to Basidomycetes only about 2%.

b) Water

In this partnership, fungus furnishes the alga with water prevents overexposure to sunlight and also provides simple mineral nutrients, while photosynthesyzing alga provides food to the fungus even if no organic materials are available.

c) Green

Cyanobacteria also known as Cyanophyta often called as blue green algae or green algae , the reason is that they were look lot a like green alga when first discovered. They are also the ancient bacteria.

d) Photosynthesis.

They are photosynthetic and aquatic and hence often term as blue green algae. This are the only bacteria which produces oxygen as a by product during photosynthesis. They contain bluish pigment called phycocyanin and only one chlorophyll i.e chlorophyll A.
