Solve the following problems: An inventor claims that he developed a heat engine operating between 300 degree C (highest temperature) and 15 degree C (lowest temperature) with thermal efficiency of 60%. Determine the maximum possible thermal efficiency if the engine is reversible. Is the heat engine possible or impossible? Why? An engineer A has considered developing a refrigerator using two temperature reservoirs in 90 degree F and 40 degree F. What is the maximum coefficient of performance (beta max) if the refrigerator is reversible? An engineer B has considered developing a heat pump using two temperature reservoirs in 90 degree F and 40 degree F. What is the maximum coefficient of performance (gamma max) if the heat pump is reversible?

Explanation / Answer

1. T1 = 300 deg C = 573K;

T2 = 15 deg C = 288K;

reversible efficiency claimed = 60%;

maximum thermal efficiency = 1-T2/T1;

= 1-288/573 = 49.7%

thus actual effiiciency cannot be more than ideal thus it is not possible.;

2.Refrigerator

T1 = 90F =32.2deg C;

T2= 40F =4.44 deg C;

COP = Q1/W = T1/(T1-T2);

COp = 10.85

3.Heat pump COP for the same temperature = Q2/Q1-Q2;

= T2/T1-T2;

=277.44/(32.22-4.44);

= 9.89;
