Question

All makers of beverages such as breweries, wineries and soda makers must wash bottles before filling. A new beverage facility is being designed, and specifications for water and power for the bottle washer are needed. One thousand bottles per hour are planned to pass through the machine. During washing, the bottles are raised to the water temperature of 60 C, and the wet bottles each take 1 gram of water with them as they leave the washer. Each glass bottle has an empty dry mass of 120 grams. Based on these values, estimate amount of make-up water required per hour, and the power needed to heat the bottles and water.

Explanation / Answer

120 gm = 0.12 kg

Make-up water requried = 1 gm/bottle * 1000 bottles / hour = 1000 gm/hr = 1 kg/hr

Specific heat of glass Cp_glass = 0.84 kJ/kg-C

Specific heat of water Cp_water = 4.2 kJ/kg-C

Power required to heat the bottles = 0.12 kg/bottle *1000 bottles/hr *0.84*(60 - 25) = 3528 kJ/hr = 3528/(60*60) kJ/s = 0.98 kW

Power required to heat the water = 1 kg/hr *4.2*(60 - 25) = 147 kJ/hr = 147/(60*60) kJ/s = 0.04 kW

Total power required = 0.04+0.98 = 1.02 kW
