Water at 200 kPa. 150 degree C enters a mixing chamber through a pipe with diameter = 25 cm at a velocity of 20 m/s. Refrigerant-134a also enters the mixing chamber with a mass flow rate of 1 kg/s, and Ethyl alcohol enters the mixing chamber with a mass flow rate of 2 kg/s. Two exiting streams containing mixtures of these fluids leave the chamber. One mixture stream consisting of refrigerant and water leaves at 200 kPa and 80 degree C with a volumetric flow rate of 0.001 m3/s. and the second mixture stream leaving the chamber contains all three fluids. Assume steady-state operation. What is the combined density of the exit stream containing the water and refrigerant (stream 4). Determine the mass flow rate of each stream exiting the chamber. Determine the mass fractions of the mixture components in each exiting stream. Water (200 kPa. 150 degree C. D=25 cm. V=20 m/s) Water & Ethyl alcohol & Refrigerant-134a Mixing Chamber Refrigerant-134a (m I kg/s) Water & Refrigerant-134a (200 kPa, 80 degree C, 0.001 m3/s) Ethyl alcohol (m =2kg/s)

Explanation / Answer

From steam table and R-134a table we get,

Specific volume of water st entry point 1 is 0.95986 m^3/kg

Volume of water entering = pi*0.25^2*20/4 = 0.982 m^3

Mass of water enterin = 0.982/0.95986 = 1.023 kg

At state 4 Specific volume of R-134a = 0.1407 m^3/kg and of water = 0.00106 m^3/kg

Let mass of water be x and mass of r-134a is y.

0.1407y + 0.00106x = 0.001

Since 0.1407>>0.001

y can be assumed to be nearly zero

Therefore x=0.943 kg

From stream 5 total mass coming out = 4.023-0.943 = 3.08 kg

a) Combined density = 0.943/0.001 = 943 kg/m^3

b) From stream 5 total mass coming out = 4.023-0.943 = 3.08 kg/s

From stream 4 mass coming out = 0.943 kg/s

c) Mass fraction of water in stream 4 = 1

Mass fraction of r-134a in 4 =0

Mass fraction of water iin stream 5 = 0.08/3.08 = 0.026

Mass fraction of r-134a iin stream 5 = 1/3.08 = 0.325

Mass fraction of alcohol iin stream 5 = 2/3.08 = 0.649
