Question

A column is formed by fastening together three wooden planks with bolts. The diameter of each bolt is 1/2in and the inside diameter of each washer is 0.625in, which is slightly larger than the diameter of the holes.  The average normal stress in the bolts when they are tightened is 6ksi.  The bearing stress between the washers and the planks must not exceed 1.2ksi.  Determine the smallest outer diameter(d) of the washers.

Determine the smallest outer diameter(d) of the washers.

Explanation / Answer

Total force = 6 ksi * pi*0.25^2 =1.178kilopound

So outer diameter be d,

then 1.178 = stress*area = 1.2* pi*(d^2-0.625^2)/4

=>d = 1.28 inch
