Question
A V belt and V pulleys with a=29 degrees are used to transmit a couple from pulley A to pulley B. The radius of each pulley is 44mm, and a force of magnitude P=800N is applied as shown to the axle of pulley A. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction is .41, determine (a) the largest couple that can be transmitted, (b) the corresponding maximum value of the tension in the belt.

A V belt and V pulleys with a=29 degrees are used to transmit a couple from pulley A to pulley B. The radius of each pulley is 44mm, and a force of magnitude P=800N is applied as shown to the axle of pulley A. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction is .41, determine (a) the largest couple that can be transmitted, (b) the corresponding maximum value of the tension in the belt.Explanation / Answer
We know that in a V-belt drive:
T1/T2 = e^(u*theta * cosec a)
Maximum power transferred = (T1-T2)v
theta = 180 - 2(alpha)
alpha = 0 [ because, both the pulleys have same radius ]
Thus, angle of contact = 180 degrees = pi radians = 3.14 radians
Torque = F * r = 0.044 * 800 = 35.2 N-m
u = 0.41
theta = 3.14 radians
a = 29 degrees
T1/T2 = 14.23
T2 = 35.2
T1 = 500.9 N
Hope this helps. Please rate it the best. thanks
