Question
1. -1 points OSColPhys2016 8.3.WA.020 A car with a mass of 980 kg is initially traveling east toward an intersection with a speed of vc = 19.0 m/s and a 1500 kg pickup is traveling north toward the same intersection. The car and truck collide at the intersection and stick together. After the collision, the wreckage (car and truck) moves off in a direction of 40.0° above the x-axis. My Notes Ask Your Teac Determine the initial speed of the truck and the final speed of the wreckage in meters per second. initial speed of the truck final speed of the wreckage m/s m/sExplanation / Answer
here,
mass of car , mc = 980 kg
mass of truck , mt = 1500 kg
intial speed of car , vc = 19 m/s
let the final speed of wreckage be v and intial speed of truck be vt
using conservation of momentum
mc * vc i + mt * vt j = ( mc + mt) * v * ( cos(40) i + sin(40) j)
980 * 19 i + 1500 * vt * j = ( 1500 + 980) * v * ( cos(40) i + sin(40) j)
on compairing
980 * 19 = ( 1500 + 980) * cos(40) * v ....(1)
and
1500 * vt = ( 1500 + 980) * v * ( sin(40) ) ...(2)
from (1) and (2)
v = 9.8 m/s
vt = 10.4 m/s
the intial speed of truck is 10.4 m/s
the final speed of wreckage is 9.8 m/s
