Question

Chapter 07, Problem 25 By accident, a large plate is dropped and breaks into three pieces. The pleces fly apart paraliel to the floor. As the plate falls, its vertical component, and no component parallel to the floor. After the collision, the component of the total momentum paralel to the floor must remain zero, since the net external force acting on the plate has no component parallel to the fioor Using the data shown in the drawing nind (a) the mass of momentum has only a Shot 2.45 AM piece 1 and (b) the mass of piece 2. 3.00 ms 9.25 AM 1.79 m/s 450 20 26 n 22 .11 AM 307ms 2.56 PM em4(a) Number (b) Number Units Units biem 63 blem 64 8

Explanation / Answer

Using law of conservation of momentum,

Along the X axis,

                         m1 v1 sin25 = m2 v2 cos45

1.26785 m1 = 1.2657 m2

                                         m2 = 1.002m1                -----------------[1]

Along the Y axis,

                     m1 v1 cos25 + m2 v2 sin45 = m3 v3

                        2.719 m1 + 1.266 m2 = 3.991          ---------------[2]

Substittute [1] in [2] then we get

                        2.719 m1 + 1.268 m1 = 3.991

m1 = 1.000 Kg

From (1). m2 = 1.002 * 1.0000 = 1.002 Kg
