Question

Problem (2) A musician with perfect pitch receives a shipment of new tuning forks that were pu from a leading discount tuning fork factory outlet store. He tries the fork that is labeled "A" (440. Hz) and is dismayed to hear it produce a tone of frequency 475 Hz. He taps it again and is so upset at the poor quality that he drops it from rest from the window at the top of his high- rise music studio office. Just as it reaches the ground, he hears it playing a perfect 440. Hz tone. How tall is the building? rchased

Explanation / Answer

Here,

speed of sound , v = 340 m/s

let the speed of the fork at the ground is v

Now, using Doppler effect

440 = 475 * 340/(340 + v)

solving for v

v = 27 m/s

Now, for the height h

h= v^2/(2g)

h = 27^2/(2 * 9.8)

h = 37.2 m

the height through which the fork falls is 37.2 m
