Conceptual Question 21.7 (3 18 of 20 (3) Constants Part A As shown in (Figure 1), two protons are launched with the same speedirom point 1 inside a paralle-plate capacitor One oton moves along the path from 1 to 2. the other from 1 to 3. Points 2 and 3 are the same distance from the positive plate. Is AU1-+2. the change in potential energy along the path 1 ? 2, larger smaler, or equal to ??1?3 ? 1-+2 Submit Reguest Answer Part B Is the proton's speed t2 at point 2 larger than, smaler than, or equal to the proton's speed Us at point 3? Explanation / Answer

Solution :

Part A)

The electric field lines are directed from positive plate to negative plate. We known that the equi-potential surfaces are perpendicular to the electric field lines. Thus, the points 2 and three lines in the same equi-potential surface and hence the potential energy along both paths is same.

So, correct answer is option (c)

Part B)

From law of conservation of energy total initial energy of the system is equal to total final energy of the system. Thus, both the protons have same kinetic energy and hence same velocity.

So correct answer is option (c)
