Question

Problem 1 he The diagram below shows one molecule of DNA that is 200 million nucleotides long. One section of t DNA (indicated by the double slash mark) is not shown so that whole molecule will fit on the page. Between nucleotides 10 million and 30 million, there are 4 sections of the DNA molecule that code for polypeptides, and between nucleotides 30 and 50 million there is one section of DNA that codes for a polypeptide. On the diagram, label the following to show that you understand the definition of each: a. All chromosomes present b. All genes described c. An urban center d. A desert e. Location of promoter(s) and/or terminatorfs) needed to produce the 5 polypeptides indicated: Nucleotide 10 million Nucleotide 30 million Nucleotide 50 million Nucleotide 200 million Nucleotide 1 3' 5' 3'

Explanation / Answer

A chromosome contains a complex set of genes and nucleotides arranged in a proper manner to construct the complete strucutre. This invovles promoters, euchormatin, heterochromatin, polymorphic regions, centromere and the telomeric ends of the chromosome, and other sequences. Whereas the promoters are located just prior the coding region or the gene, the regions of the chromosome which are highly populated with euchromatin genes are called urban centers. On the other hand, a desert is the heterochromatin region of the chromosome. Together, all these parts make up the whole chromosome.
